He was turning 8 and knew exactly what kind of birthday party he wanted to have. For those of you who have never heard about Minecraft, you should know that it is a video game that allows players to create worlds and if my family is any indication, it is quite addictive.
If you do play Minecraft, you can probably tell that I don't!
But I know what creepers are, so I decided to use them as the basis for our party.
I made creeper t-shirts and creeper cups and creeper balloons. The great thing about Minecraft is that everything is built out of blocks. So I used black electrical tape for the cups and balloons. And although they weren't perfect, they looked great and the kids loved them. And at the end of a party that is really ALL that matters!
We bought the creeper head for the birthday boy (just a glorified cardboard box really!) and borrowed the Minecraft pickaxe and sword from a friend.
There are tons of Minecraft printables out there. My husband painstakingly made all of these adorable Papercrafts! They were a lot of work, but completely worth it! This is one aspect of the party that we could have worked on in the weeks leading up to the party. The more, the better!
My in-laws were in town and they graciously cut white tape to get this glass block effect on the windows. Since I do not play Minecraft, I had to ask a lot of "is this worth it?" questions of my children. They confirmed that this was totally worth it! (The tape peeled off quite nicely too! Especially since my husband did it!).
The stage was set for Ethan's friends to arrive (complete with block clouds overhead!). Since the boys would actually be playing Minecraft on the Xbox, Ethan invited 3 of his friends rather than his whole class. Only 2 of the friends could come, so the birthday boy's brother was able to play as well.
Normally, I plan activities during a party. This one was easy! They just made their own pizzas, played Minecraft, ate their pizza creations, played more Minecraft, had cake, opened presents and played more Minecraft!
I looked at many different websites to find the perfect Minecraft cake. And by perfect, I mean EASY! I finally settled on a chocolate cake/rice krispie/ blue jello cake. It was fun and everyone loved it!
My favorite cake tutorial can be found here. It is a YouTube video and I probably watched it 10 times! Other inspiration ideas can be found on my Minecraft party Pinterest board.
It was another great party! Happy 8th birthday, Ethan!!!
