Whatcha Reading?

For the first time in as long as I can remember, I didn't receive a book for Christmas.  This is in part due to the gift of my Nook for my birthday way back in January.  Since I can now buy any book I want at any time I want (within reason- I DO show restraint!), it doesn't make sense for my husband to go to a bookstore.

I think it might also be due to the disappointing purchase he made a few years ago!

It is tradition for me to snuggle up with a good book on Christmas day.  It didn't happen this year, so on Monday I started looking for a book that I might want to read.  Nothing was jumping out at me.  So, I went to my bookshelf.

I would love to have a room completely devoted to books.  Or my own library like John Quincy Adams built at Peacefield.

But I have a lovely bookshelf.  And I am not opposed to re-reading books.  In fact, books are like old friends and I love the opportunity to read them again.

I had thought about reading Stepping Heavenward again.  It is an excellent book.  But then I saw The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society .  I had only read this book once.  It needed to be read again.  On the very first page is this quote from the book, "I wonder how the book got to Guernsey?  Perhaps there is some secret homing instinct in books that brings them to their perfect readers."

I appreciate this sentiment. I have not read as many books as I would have liked to this year.  I have been reading a lot of blogs (which I thoroughly enjoy!), but I love getting lost in a book.  One of my favorite bloggers (www.thegypsymama.com ) directed me to The Nester - turns out that she was thinking about books too and so I plan to link with her today.

I prefer recommendations from like minded readers.  Based on several recommendations, my next Nook purchase will probably be The Hunger Games .

That is what I am currently reading and what I hope to read soon.

But just in case you are interested, these are the books that I read or am still reading in 2011:

North and South
The Three Musketeers
The Help
Made to Crave
Heaven is For Real
One Thousand Gifts
Unbroken
Grace for the Good Girl
One with the Shepherd

Besides "Unbroken" which I am still trying to get into, I have loved everything that I have read this year.  I wish this list was longer.  But I realize that this is the reality of my life right now.  If I were to list all of the kids books that I have read this year, this post would be way too long.

But clearly, I need more suggestions.  Because it is snowing and from what I hear, this is what my world in Rochester will look like for the next 3 months.  There is nothing better than reading a good book on a snow day.  So please share books that you think I need to read!

What was your favorite book that you read in 2011?

  1. Seriously, I have to pick just one? That will never happen! :) If we are talking fiction (which I am), my very favorites for this year were 1. Guernsey 2. Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet 3. The Help 4. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
PS I just read the Hunger Games and it was good...a little gory, but super good.
Non-fiction 1. One Thousand Gifts 2. Educating the WholeHearted Child 3. Dancing with my Father 4. Grace for the Good Girl and 5. Kisses from Katie
Last year my birthday gift was a Kindle and now I think my hubs regrets it! hee hee. Yes, I can buy anything I want. As you said, within reason, of course! :)

  3. Hunger Games is on my list for next year, too. I read the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society in 2010. That one is really good.

  4. Stepping Heavenward? Love! It's been way too long since I've read that. I also enjoyed The Help and have plans to read the Hunger Games soon. :) And apparently the Potato Peel Pie one is going to be on the "to read" short list, because everyone from The Nester's linky keeps talking about it. Great list!

  5. Definitely The Hunger Games - so good! I finished the series in like 5 days! Anything by Francine Rivers - the Mark of the Lion series! Kisses from Katie but I think by far the best and most life changing book I read this year was Radical by David Platt. It is so good!! Oh yeah and Sarah's Key was really good. I'm reading 11/22/63 by Stephen King right now, and it is pretty good! I bought Unbroken thinking it was about something else - but it's about running and world war 2 - two of my favorite topics so you'd think I'd be able to get through it...
